چکیده

Apis mellifera L. is native to Europe, Africa, and Asia (including Saudi Arabia, Iran and the Ural mountains of Russia). It is currently widely distributed across the world due to multiple migrations and introductions (Ruttner, 1988). Apis mellifera includes about two dozen subspecies that are present in different regions of the world. These subspecies have been classified into five main lineages: ‘C’ (the Carnica ORIGINAL RESEARCH ARTICLE

Restriction Endonuclease Cleavage Site and Length Polymorphisms in Mitochondrial DNA of Apis mellifera mellifera and A. m. carnica (Hymenoptera: Apidae)

Ann. Entomol. Soc. Am. 83(1): 81-88 (1990) ABSTRACT Restriction endonuclease cleavage maps of mitochondrial DNAs of Scandinavian Apis mellifera mellifera L., of German, Austrian, and Yugoslavian A. m. carnica Pollman, and of Austrian "Nigra" honey bees are compared with previously published maps of mitochondrial DNA from North American bees of European ancestry and Brazilian Africanized bees. Morphometric and genetic changes in a population of Apis mellifera after 34 years of Africanization.

Though the replacement of European bees by Africanized honey bees in tropical America has attracted considerable attention, little is known about the temporal changes in morphological and genetic characteristics in these bee populations. We examined the changes in the morphometric and genetic profiles of an Africanized honey bee population collected near where the original African swarms escape...

Male reproductive parasitism: a factor in the africanization of European honey-bee populations.

Africanized drone honey bees (Apis mellifera) migrate into European honey-bee colonies in large numbers, but Africanized colonies only rarely host drones from other colonies. This migration leads to a strong mating advantage for Africanized bees since it both inhibits European drone production and enhances Africanized drone production.

ECOLOGICAL IMPACT ON NATIVE BEES BY THE INVASIVE AFRICANIZED HONEY BEE Abejas cleptoparasitas, con énfasis en las abejas hospederas colectoras de aceites (Hymenoptera: Apoidea)

Very little effort has been made to investigate bee population dynamics among intact wilderness areas. The presence of newly-arrived feral Africanized honey bee (AHB), Apis mellifera (Apidae), populations was studied for 10-17 years in areas previously with few or no escaped European apiary honey bees. Here I describe and interpret the major results from studies in three neotropical forests: Fr...
